I first became interested in working with children with learning difficulties when I did a university placement at the Dyslexia Centre, Glemsford in 2010. During this time, I was able to observe some of Jane’s lessons and was fascinated by how personalised, structured and engaging each session was. I really enjoyed those weeks at the DLSC, getting to know the learners and absorbing as many teaching strategies as I could, and this helped me to realise that specialist teaching was the direction in which I wanted my career to head. That summer, Jane asked me to teach for her at Back to School Booster, which I have been doing annually ever since.
After my first teaching job, I worked for a year as a Teaching Assistant, which gave me the opportunity to run 1:1 and small group interventions for children in English, maths and social skills, as well as gain some experience as a 1:1 support for two autistic children. These experiences confirmed for me that teaching children with learning difficulties was a real interest of mine and it was during this year that, with encouragement and support from Jane, I studied for my Postgraduate Certificate in Assessment Theory for Dyslexia and Literacy with Dyslexia Action.
I am a qualified Primary School teacher, having graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University in 2011 with a BA(Hons) in Primary Education and, since then, have worked in a variety of mainstream schools. I also gave 1:1 lessons in English to primary aged children alongside my full-time teaching whilst in the UK, which helped me to further my experience as a tutor. I now live in Germany, having moved here in August 2015, and am trying very hard to learn the language! Here, I am just setting up as a Freelance Tutor, offering 1:1 lessons to English and American ex-patriots with learning difficulties. I find 1:1 teaching extremely rewarding, as it allows me to really get the best out of each individual learner and to tailor my teaching much more specifically to each child’s personal needs. Through my work here at Brainwaves International Online, I aim to help every child I work with to believe in themselves and achieve everything they are capable of.
